Atlas’ Weight

I put this thing together a while back, and finally got around to coming back and cleaning it up enough to be posted recently.

They called you ‘Atlas’ long ago
For all the maps you knew
From sea and stars to ancient tales
They all would come to you

And though through time the others learned
They grew both wise and older
Through all the dark did not forget
You helped them all grow bolder.

Your place in their mythology
It changed but did not leave
And slowly in this place of yours
A new form you have weaved

“Atlas” once and “Atlas” now
From underneath you guide
And though you hold no leadership
You still help steer the ride

Once trusted then, more trusted now
In every ear you speak
You speak in tones of logic
Or stop havoc that’s wreaked

The world rests on your shoulders
This weight lies on your head
Now all that’s left within your mind:
The looming sense of dread.
